Photo of ADA Kit #1 The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires hotels and other public facilities to provide equal access to people with disabilities. Hotel rooms must be equipped with specific assistive systems for Deaf or Hearing Impaired guests. ADA Accessibility Guidelines, published by the U.S. Department of Justice, state you must offer the following devices:

Text Telephone (TTY/TDD)
Notification Systems
Telephone Amplifier
Closed-Caption TV Decoder
Visual Smoke Detector

The ADA is a comprehensive bill designed to end discrimination against persons with disabilities and to provide full accessibility for persons with disabilities, including communication disabilities for those needing hearing assistance. No exemptions have been made for small businesses.

THE REQUIREMENTS

The chart below illustrates the number of rooms that are required to be equipped based on the total number of rooms in the facility.

201 to 1,000	2% of total

Part of the cost may be tax deductible. Consult your accountant for details. Failure to comply may result in fines up to $50,000 for the first violation and $100,000 for each subsequent violation.
