Feature Article & Links: Two ears are better than one - By "Mr. Helix" Reliable information is the backbone of good communication, therefore, the information supplied to your brain must be accurate. Poor communication only leads to misunderstanding and frustration, which in turn may interfere with our interpersonal relationships on a daily basis. Binaural hearing aids can help people with hearing loss because they provide information "directly to the brain, not just to the ears, making messages easier to understand" (Gardner). Why are two ears better than one? More Clarity - As Dr. Gardner explains, "When the ears work together, less power is required for comfortable hearing. Thus, binaural hearing aids offer greater efficiency and clarity than monoaural hearing aids because they are used at lower volume settings. The reduced need for energy saves wear and tear on your sensitive ears. As a result, loud sounds are less annoying, listening is less stressful and the ear is better protected against the damage caused by excessive amplification." More natural - Nature has equipped all mammals (including humans) with two, equally functioning ears as a primary tool for survival. Two-eared hearing is very much needed to survive in our noisy societies, to hear in traffic, in crowded places, and to understand speech. Improved Sound Localization - The ability to localize sound depends upon two equally functioning ears. This is how one can determine the direction of a car approaching, for example. "The sound reaches the closer ear a few micro-seconds earlier, and at a somewhat higher intensity than it reaches the opposite ear. These minute differences in the signals transmitted to our brain by each ear, enable us to make the important, and potentially life-saving decision regarding the exact location of the car. When one ear is functioning better than the other, there is inadequate information to quickly and reliably determine the direction of a sound" (Phonak Hearing Systems). To Avoid Being (Unintentionally) Rude - One-eared individuals are more prone to be perceived as being rude because they "tend to ignore people who speak toward the deaf ear" while the good ear is "occupied with listening to other things" (Gardner). Research/Anedoctal Evidence - Scientific research, as well as the personal experience of many hearing aid users, suggests that the majority of hearing impaired people can benefit greatly from wearing two hearing instruments.
