Assistech fully embraces accessibility

We are in the process of optimizing our website for maximum accessibility by those with disabilities or special needs. A number of access keys and a "skip navigation" link have been added for the convenience of screen reader users, who normally utilize a computer keyboard (instead of a mouse) to access web content. Learn more about our accessibility plan.

Assistech.com now in French!

We hired an international translation firm to translate a portion of our website to French. This means French speakers all over the world will be able to access our website in their native language. The French translation project is under way and several web pages are already available en français!

Bulletin board reinstated

We are pleased to announce that a newly designed Discussion Board is now available for those with disabilities and special needs. The idea is to promote a discussion on various disability-related issues. Visit our Bulletin Board.

Assistech.com rated 'very good' to 'excellent' by most

A poll conducted on our website for the last 9 months revealed that 74% of the voters rated our website between "very good" and "excellent". Out of 400 votes cast, only 18% rated it "average" while 9% had no opinion. Poll results

Ototoxic Drugs and Hearing Loss - By Neil Bauman (PhD)

In the course of talking with and helping multiplied hundreds of people with hearing losses, I am appalled at the enormous number of people who have lost much (or all) of their hearing from taking drugs prescribed by their doctors. Many of these unfortunate people were never told that taking such drugs could (and would) damage their ears.

There is abysmal ignorance on the part of both health care professionals and the general population concerning the many prescription drugs that can indeed damage our ears. One lady told me that when challenged, her doctor couldn't name even one such drug! In fact, ototoxic drugs are so far removed from the stream of human consciousness that the word is not even listed in most dictionaries!

We call drugs that damage our ears ototoxic (OH-toe-TOKS-ick although some people pronounce it AWE-toe-TOKS-ick) drugs. Ototoxic just means ear (oto) poisoning (toxic). These drugs typically either damage the hair cells in the cochlea, the hair cells in the balance (vestibular) system of our inner ears or our auditory nerves. Read more...
